Basic introduction of ingot molds
1. Structure of ingot mold: Ingot mold is mostly made of cast iron, and its service life fluctuates greatly, generally in 60-80 times.The section size and openings depend on the type of steel, its use, and the capacity of the roughing mill, etc. The unit weight of the ingots cast ranges from hundreds of kilograms to tens of tons.
2. Shape of ingot mold: From the longitudinal section shape, there are two kinds of ingot molds: upper large and lower small & upper small and lower large.

Basic design of ingot molds
1. Number of ingot mold prongs: The ingot section should be as close as possible to the shape of the product.
2. Height-to-Diameter ratio (H/D): The ratio has an influence on the casting quality of the ingot. There is a tendency for the ingot mold H/D ratio to decrease.
3. Taper: This refers to the inclination of one side of the ingot body. When the taper is 1% to 1.5%, there is no problem with mold release.
4. Shape and wall thickness of ingot molds: There are three types of shapes: polygonal, round and corrugated. The wall thickness is designed so that the cooling layer has a certain thickness. This prevents cracks on the ingot surface and reduces mold wear so that the ingot mold has sufficient life.

Ingot molds are the molds that bear the molten steel during pouring, and are the models that allow the molten steel to solidify into ingots.

Traditional method of pouring steel - mold casting.

Mold casting is a process in which steel from a steel drum is injected into an ingot mold of a certain shape and size and condensed into a solid ingot.

With the continuous development of steel smelting process technology, especially in the 90's the rapid development of continuous casting technology, mold casting process has been gradually replaced by continuous casting process. Mold casting process such as plate and wire, both in terms of cost and quality have been unable to compete with continuous casting.

However, some special steels, such as large forgings, steels requiring a certain compression ratio, and small quantities of special steels, must be produced by the mold casting process.
